A WONDERFUL BLANK CANVAS
One of my favorite comic strips of
all times was the final one of Calvin and Hobbs. In one single panel and
in full color all it shows is Calvin and Hobbs dressed in their snow
gear holding a toboggan. They are standing atop of a hill looking down
over a fresh coat of snow. It's absolutely perfect - not a trace of
contact by human or creature. I cannot remember if there was a caption,
but it did not matter, the picture said it all. Calvin and Hobbs were
off to new adventures on a beautiful untouched blank white canvas - it
was a new day!
I often think of this profound comic during this time of year. In part
because I am blessed to have a part of my daily drive include the
untouched snow covered rolling wheat fields. Yet, I also am reminded of
this comic because of the pending New Year.
A very sage woman who lived a very full and long life once said to me,
“Before I get out of bed in the morning I say my prayers. After which, I
try to visualize my day as a blank canvas and then ask myself what kind
of day would I like to paint today.”
I have always been struck with the wisdom that accompanied such a
perspective on life. Rather than carrying over baggage from the day
before, rather than bringing undue burden or worry, this woman had
chosen to bring a newness and freshness to each day.
As we usher in 2008, rather than making resolutions, this year we should
look at the year ahead as a fresh blanket of snow - a beautiful
untouched blank white canvas. It is not only a new year but a new day -
what kind of life would we like to paint?
Our scripture story draws to a close with these words: Then I saw a new
heaven and a new earth…See I am making all things new (Revelation:
21:1-5). As we begin a new year, with a wonderful blank canvas, see what
new things our Lord is calling us to paint.
Blessings,

The Rev. Brian N. Prior, Rector
