LITTLE THINGS
Last week I was blessed to have a
wonderful conversation with a cancer survivor. It was absolutely
inspiring to see not only the physical healing, but also the healing of
her soul. Through this horrific ravaging of her body she has come out
on the other side with an incredible clarity and wisdom about her life's
direction.
At the heart of this transformation was a new understanding about what
was truly important in her life. The things that use to drive and
motivate, as well as those that irritated and frustrated her, have been
replaced with a new patience and perspective.
What I found not only inspiring, but also truly refreshing, was her
letting go of what is often called the “little things.” The reality is,
so much of life for most of us seems to be consumed or at least
distracted with these “little things.”
It is far too easy for us to only look through the micro lens, such that
we often lose the macro of the big picture. Minor annoyances or things
done differently than we would choose to do them take on an
ever-expanding life of their own. Before we know it we have been seduced
into believing the “little things” are “big things.”
As we once again accompany Jesus on his journey through Palm Sunday,
Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, the Easter Vigil and Easter morning it is
a prime opportunity for us to step back, move away from the minutia of
the “little things” and to embrace the “big things” that truly bring
about new life for us.
Blessings,

The Rev. Brian N. Prior, Rector
